Shirley Golf Club

Shirley has been hosting Golf for Disabled Children for 16 years. Every week some 200 children with wide ranging disabilities from 20 special schools and charity groups attend a course of 1 hour coaching sessions.

The children each receive a Junior Golf Passport outlining and certifying the various elements of the course, and are given a “Special Golfers” cap with their star performer awarded a gold certificate. Each year a School Group is chosen to receive an engraved School of the Year Trophy.

The continuity of the programme has been assured by the generosity of our club members and local and national funders. We also benefit from the help of the English Federation of Disability Sports, the Golf Foundation and England Golf.

With the support of these associations and the encouragement of Lord Coe, Peter Alliss and John Inverdale we are now using our best endeavours to recruit clubs across the country to follow our lead and offer coaching to 3 or 4 of their nearest special educational needs schools and disability charities.

Annual feedback from the schools is always extremely positive reflecting the enormous enthusiasm shown by the children.

The enthusiasm shown by schools at “Taster Days” is matched only by the goodwill shown by club members and the excellent publicity for the club.

Spare a few moments to watch this short commentary by Peter Alliss.
